The Storyteller Squad

Listen up!

Are you a writer who must have silence to create? Or do you like music to help you capture that perfect mood?

If you enjoy silence, then well, thanks for stopping by. I have no tips to help you, other than keep on keeping on.

If you enjoy music, I thought I’d share some of my favorite tracks to help set the moods you’re trying to capture. Most of these are movie soundtracks, because if I listen to music with words, well, they’ll end up in my manuscript. No good! Besides, movie music is made to capture emotion, so you can’t do better than cranking up a few film tunes.

So without further ado, here are my favorite tracks to listen to, along with links to Amazon music in case you want to check them out yourself.

Don’t forget to let me know what you enjoy listening to in the comments below.

Romance:

Age of Adaline

Vanity Fair

Midnight in Paris

Suspense:

Mildred Pierce-the HBO miniseries

Hunger Games

Bourne Identity

Adventure:

Incredibles 1

Incredibles 2

Star Trek: 2009 Movie

Star Wars: Rogue One

Man from Snowy River—Also works for Romance

Calm and Reflective:

Ludovico Einaudi: Una Mattina (but anything by him is amazing!)

Aaron Copland: The Copeland Collection

Joshua Bell: Romance of the Violin

I hope you find something here you like. And don’t forget to tell me the tracks you enjoy. I always enjoy finding new music to set that perfect mood. Happy writing!

  • Thanks for this suggestion! Usually, I have Alexa play “Classical for Study” or “Classical for Work”. I think the movie soundtrack idea might work better.

    • Classical is very good to listen to as well, but soundtracks definitely build up the emotion, whatever you’re wanting to convey! Have a fantastic day as you listen to some great tunes!! 🙂

  • I don’t listen to music while writing (I’m too easily distracted!), but I do when exercising, gardening, and doing chores around the house. I’m slowly making my own “book playlist,” as I find myself listening to certain songs over-and-over that inspire my writing of my current work in progress. Maybe it will be something I share with my future readers!

  • Such a fun post! I love music, but ironically when I’m writing I need silence. But my son likes listening to music while he studies, so I’ll share with him.
