Praying the Word

One thing I’ve learned through my years of being a Christian is that God’s Word is true. I’ve seen it over and over through answered prayers. As it says in Isaiah 55, just as the rain and snow come down to earth and water it, bringing forth the bud and seed, God’s word also goes from His mouth and doesn’t return to Him void but will, “prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” (vs. 11) This year I’ve decided to focus my prayer life more on this promise. It is my desire to pray the Word over EVERY situation in my life this year. Here’s what it might look like.

First, as a parent, it means that I can pray prayers like, “God, You promise us in Isaiah that You will save our children. So I’m trusting you to save my child from…” Or, “Father, Your word says that our children will have great peace if they’re taught by You. So I thank you for giving my child the peace that passes all understanding, even in the midst of this difficult situation.”

See where I’m going?

As a writer, Proverbs 29:18 tells us where there is no vision, the people perish. I believe God has given us a calling. An assignment. And since it was He who gave us the desires of our hearts to fulfill this assignment, this call on our lives, then we can pray into this and trust Him for the words and ideas. “Lord God, thank you for the vision You have given me. I’ll be honest, Lord, I’m feeling a bit dry right now. My ideas aren’t taking off, my fingers can’t seem to find the words, and the button I’m hitting the most on my keyboard is the delete button. I don’t want to write anything that isn’t from You, so please fill my spirit with Your Spirit of revelation. Give me fresh ideas, creative thoughts, and guide my hands across the keyboard. I submit my whole work to You, for Your glory.”

Still with me?

At times when I’m at a crossroads, or have a big decision to make, I can pray prayers like Proverbs 3:6. “God, You ask me to acknowledge You in everything I do, and if I do, then You will show me the way. Right now, I’m not sure which direction to take. I trust You that as I continue to honor You in my life, You will show me the right decision.”

Finally, there is something to be said for corporate prayer. The Bible tells us the Holy Spirit is with us when we come together as two or more. When you have two or more people together praying the Word, there is power in that! I want to encourage, no, challenge you, to pray the Word more in your prayers. You will not be disappointed!

Do you have a favorite verse or passage of Scripture that you pray often? If so, I’d love to hear what it is and why!
