A Treasure Trove for the Writer, Newbie & Seasoned Alike

Whether you’re a new writer looking for direction or a seasoned writer wanting a fresh perspective, I’ve compiled a short list of valuable writing resources running the gamut from blogs and newsletters to podcasts and videos.

We’ll start with one of my faves: Randy Ingermanson. One of his more well-known books is called How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method, which is an excellent reference for any writer—plotter, pantser, and everything in between. Even better, he sends out a monthly newsletter chock full of excellent writing and publishing advice, tips, how-to’s, etc. Just follow this link to his website, and if you like what you find, hit that subscribe button. 🙂

Next up, we have Abbie Emmons, who teaches writers “how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.” Sounds good, huh? A friend sent me a link to one of her videos when I was in the middle of working on my second novel a few years ago, and I’ve been hooked ever since. As with Ingermanson, Abbie gives writers excellent writing tips and advice, but through her YouTube channel and website. She even has a 23-part video series on How to Write a Novel with the 3-Act Story Structure. Yep. 23 videos. 🤯 Click the link to that particular playlist, and you can explore more from there: 3-Act Story Structure.

Within the last few months, I came across Nanci Panuccio, whose podcast, Writer Unleashed, is “a deep dive into story techniques, writing craft, and the mindsets that help you write with unstoppable momentum and create stories readers can’t put down.” Releasing a new episode each week, she has a more laidback, unconventional outlook when it comes to writing and publishing, and I’ve found many of her episodes refreshing and encouraging.

Reedsy is an amazing treasure trove for any writer, but especially for those looking to indie-publish. This site brings together editors, marketers, designers, and more for your perusal. It offers an informative blog, online articles, how-to’s, comparisons between publishing platforms, book tools, and…again…much more. 😄 I found Reedsy to be an exceptional resource when researching the ins and outs of self-publishing Tinsel in a Twist, especially with its book-formatting option.

Last on today’s list is September C. Fawkes, another recent addition to my writing quiver who offers tons of writing information and tips in her weekly newsletters. I don’t know how she has the time to churn out those letters and work as a freelance editor and make progress on her own writing, but for now, she’s killing it. 😆 Enjoy her sassy sense of humor and check out her Writing Tip Index, alphabetized for your convenience. 😉

Laurie Germaine

With a heart that beat for Europe and a nose that thumbed the American West, Laurie Germaine is a walking testimony to God's humor as she now resides in Montana with her husband, two daughters, and their Alaskan Malamute. When she's not working on a new manuscript (or rather, when said manuscript is misbehaving), you can find her knitting anything from toys to felted phone cases, crafting backdrops for her 16" Ellowyne Wilde dolls (look 'em up; you'll be fascinated, too!), embarking on DIY adventures, and generally avoiding housework.
