“As the years went by, Thor marveled at the young chicken’s powers. Thor needed his hammer to summon lightening, but Thundercluck could generate it from within. Someday, thought Thor, that chicken may be the strongest of us all.” From Thundercluck: Chicken of Thor, Book 1.
Two Thundercluck books have been released so far, and I thoroughly enjoyed them both. Paul Tillery IV and Meg Wittwer bring to life the trials and tribulations of Thundercluck and a young Brunhilde as they learn about courage, friendship, and the power of words.
In book one, when an Asgardian chicken is struck by Thor’s hammer, she lays a glowing egg. A moment later, the egg hatches, and Thundercluck is born. Half mortal. Half god. All natural chicken. But there is danger for the young chick, and he is sent away from Asgard to protect him from Gorman Bones, the fired and disgraced chef to the gods who will stop at nothing to get Thundercluck on the menu. Years go by, but they soon realize that Thundercluck is the only one who can save Asgard from the monsters that threaten them. They bring him home and he must learn how to be brave and use his powers to save his friends, and all the realms, from danger.
In book two, Thundercluck and Brunhilde are once more threatened by Gorman, plus a few new evil characters, including the Book Wyrm who has taken a book that needs to be returned to the library. But when Thundercluck and Brunhilde see the situation differently, can their friendship handle the strain?
Sprinkled with humor, colorful characters, and Norse mythology, these books are perfect for upper elementary/early middle school readers. Check out their website for more information and fun, http://www.thundercluck.com/book , and watch the book trailer below.
So, that’s what I’ve been reading. What about you? Have you read anything fun lately?
