That’s an odd statement, isn’t it? A gecko is a wall-crawling reptile with horizontal pupils, not a ground-loving human with proper circular pupils.
Let me tell you a quick story. I live in the Midwest where the summers are hot and the winters are bitterly cold.
One early autumn morning I pulled on my work jacket and headed out into the brisk darkness. I had a list of things to do when I got home but my plans would be immediately changed when I arrived at work.
At my job, we receive multiple truckloads and shipments. While organizing items and cleaning up, I noticed something running away from me. It was thin and small. Thinking it was one of those creepy crawly centipedes we deal with from time to time, I scampered over to it. Upon approach, I noticed it was not a multi-legged monstrosity but a tiny tailless gecko.
“Oh my gosh!” I cried while frankly reaching for an empty box. I gently corralled him into my safe enclosure and, after showing him off to co-workers, I found a quiet place for him to sit.
Where on earth did you come from, little guy? I thought.
I’m definitely not from around here. I could imagine its tiny tongue dancing to tell me of their long journey. It’ freezing here.
I placed a makeshift lid over the box and wished I could say, “Trust me little buddy, I won’t let you freeze.”
“What are you going to do with him?” A few coworkers asked.
“Well, I’ll see if one of my friends with reptiles can take him.”
I didn’t have such luck and, honestly; I was getting more attached as the workday went on.
I rigged a fish tank to house my new friend and immediately went to the internet for care instructions. I got a heat lamp, food, and also a free reptile cage from a friend.
The little lizard even got a name. Liz Nerd. (I know I know, but I like puns.)
There is no telling how long this little guy or gal will last (also won’t know what they are until they grow up) but I’m happy to have stumbled upon them.
Did you know in most states the Mediterranean gecko is invasive and considered a nuisance? They get stepped on and killed because they aren’t a protected species. They are just like any spider, good for bug control, but not much else.
But where I live they are very, very rare. They must hitch a ride on a truck to get here, and they won’t last very long on their own. To me it was a treasure that shouldn’t have to freeze to death.
You are that treasure to your Creator. He values you because to Him you are a rare find. Something that should be protected, loved, and cared for.
Other people might ignore you and step on you, but not Him. He thinks your writing, your ambitions, and the stories you have to share are worth something. Why would he put you on earth if he didn’t have a message for you to share?
So don’t give up. You have a friend above, making sure your earthly enclosure is the right temp and you have enough food to make it for the night.
You are God’s little Gecko and He’s not going to let you freeze to death. He’s going to take you to a better place that never gets cold and never has trucks that take you way to a place where you don’t belong.
What sweet sentiments. Thank you for sharing this story and caring for one of God’s creatures. I’m glad He spoke to your heart through this tiny lizard.
Thank you! My husband laughed at me when he saw the little guy but replied, “And this is why I love you.”
