If you’re like me, you need another Epic fantasy read to quench your thirst for adventure. Fear not I have not one but two series for you to check out!
The Girl With Stars in Her Eyes is the first of the Fire Bird Series. Tambrynn is an unusual young girl. Her pale hair and shimmering eyes cause her much trouble as she has been accused of being a witch more than once. Her strange abilities that happen when she is angry don’t help her cause. She can move objects with her mind and emotions but isn’t sure how. In a failed attempt to stay quiet and finish her indentured servitude, she draws the attention of a harsh cook within her employer’s home. The cook attacks her and forces Tambrynn’s abilities to surface before the entire house.
She is sentenced to the stocks for defending herself but a strange bird follows her carriage. After an accident leaves her alone in the forest and her carriage destroyed, she thinks she has found her freedom; but her trouble is only beginning. The strange bird manifests into a man named Lucas, who claims he has been guarding her all her life from her evil mage father.
Afraid to believe him she uses her powers to fight him but only proves his point. No human can perform such magic, only one who is half-mage. She begrudgingly agrees to follow this Lucas to her home realm and find her grandparents who may be able to help her. That is if they have gotten over her mother’s crime of falling in love with a mage.
Evil beasts, strange magic, loveable dwarves, powerful totems, and a creator known as the Kinsman fill this story with fresh adventure.
Here’s the score sheet:
Clean read department: Squeaky clean with an allegorical Christian message.
Romance: No spice
Moral department: Nothing questionable
Worldview: A Christian perspective.
Age Rage:14+
Overall, 5 out of 5 Firebirds!
Up Next, A Soul as Cold as Frost. The first of The Winter Souls series.
Are you end the mood for a little Christmas spirit? Or perhaps a story with the same feeling and message as Narnia?
The main character, Helen, struggles to fit in with anyone, even her family. Her life initially seems sad but unremarkable… until a strange woman holding an even stranger orb appears. After she receives the orb, Helen meets a darkly clad boy named Zane who leads her into a mysterious new world. Magical creatures, deadly foes, crazy jesters who resemble a certain jolly old soul, a sparkling orb of truth, dwarves, and more candy than you could ever hope to eat fill this book to the brim with whimsical magic.
The unique storytelling and chapter breaks made this feel like a book lost in time, in a good way! The magical poetry woven throughout the story and the handful of allegorical nods wrapped this tale up in a beautiful red bow. (Oops! Zane doesn’t like red)
The overall message is that truth will prevail no matter who tries to cover it up. The only criticism I will offer is I didn’t like how much Zane picked on Helen. Though confronted with his rudeness; he only lightens up a little. I believe this is merely a personal reflection as I’m not a fan of the endearing way some people make fun of others. But this is only book one of four and there is lots of room for change and plot twists!
So, here’s the scoresheet:
Clean read department: Squeaky clean with a Christian message.
Romance: No spice, Minimal handholding.
Morals: Nothing questionable
Age Rage:12+
Overall, Five out of five peppermint sticks. This story is beautifully unique!
Now you have no excuses, you have two amazing new fantasy stories to dive into. What’s one more book on your To Be Read list?
