Kalila Chronicles, Series Review

The Seer

A girl with awakening powers, a mighty angel, a boy with secrets, and a sassy demon. What’s not to love? If you enjoy urban fantasy, you will love The Seer by Erin R Howard.

Thea, trapped in another vivid nightmare, sleeps unaware of the angel and demon dueling beside her bed. The estranged brothers, Matthias the guardian angel, and Viktor the high-raking demon, argue Thea’s fate. Viktor reveals he wants freedom from Lucifer and promises to protect Thea if he is offered sanctuary in the city of Bethesda. Matthias agrees to the terms. Their plan only has one problem, Thea doesn’t know what her freshly awaken powers are and she can’t control when they come or go.

Thinking little of her nightmares Thea meets a young boy named Sam at school and fosters a crush. She speeds home from a casual outing with him afraid she will miss her curfew.

Her life (and her car) is turned upside down when her powers stir, and she notices Viktor standing in the road. She only spots him because she is a Seer with the ability to see the spiritual realm.

She wakes from her crash next to Matthias and Viktor who explain the gravity of her situation. Other demons search for her because of her sight and the clock ticks to get her to safety. She agrees to go with the brothers and enters a world full of danger.

This is a fast-paced urban Christian fantasy with a healthy dose of humor sprinkled throughout. My favorite character of course is the sassy demon, Viktor, looking for redemption. Throughout the story, we learn about courage, loyalty, and sacrifice. I give this action-packed urban fantasy 5 out of 5 dragons with a 15+ age rating for mild action and clean/mild romance. If you finish this story wanting more don’t worry, it’s the start of a trilogy called The Kalila Chronicles.

The Soul Searcher

Elnora sits watching tv with her bodyguard wondering if her life could have been different if she hadn’t stayed in hiding. What would it be like to live out the world? Her questions are instantly answered once an intruder kills her guard and kidnaps her.

The second installment of The Kalila Chronicles hits the ground running with an intense opening. As soon as our questions from the last adventure are answered more arise. Who kidnapped Elnora? Why are the portals under attack? And who is the little girl keeping Elnora alive?

Our previous heroes are not forgotten. Thea kills time at Bethesda wondering if she could do more to help the fight against Lucifer. Her mother continues to keep secrets from her, hindering any chance of healing their relationship. Matthias rests in a hospital in Bethesda healing from his wounds and Viktor relaxes in his new stress-free life.

Everyone’s feeling of security comes crashing down when Sam returns with word from the Kalila. The portals are under attack and Elnora is kidnapped.

Thea mounts a rescue mission with Sam, and Viktor begrudgingly joins. The tension escalates when they find the body of Elnora’s guard and a phone with only two contacts in Elnora’s room.

Thea, Sam, and Viktor must risk everything to bring Elnora back safely and get to the bottom of this strange plot.

I enjoyed this story as much as the first, that is until I got to the end—a cliffhanger.

Thankfully the third book is already out so I will spare you my rants on ending with a cliffhanger. In this story, we learn about morals, the bond of friendship, and temptation.

I give this Urban Fantasy 4.5 out of 5 Dragons and give it a 16+ age rating for the increased but necessary violence. It also remains a clean romance with the slow burn arch turned up a notch.  To end this review, I leave you with my favorite quote. “Viktor leaned down towards her, his green eyes intensifying as he spoke, “You said it yourself the other day. No one knows the darkness like me.”The Soul Searcher by Erin Howard.

The Silencer

A gun goes off and a body hits the floor. But whose is it? It wasn’t Thea like she thought but that makes it so much worse.

The final book in the Kalila Chronicles starts with a literal bang. Our cliffhanger is answered and it’s not the way we expected.

Conflicts arise as Sam demands Thea return to Bethesda for her own safety. The slow kindling of love between Sam and Thea is nearly snuffed out by secrets held for years and harsh words not restrained. To top everything off Sam’s alienated brother arrives at the funeral with a note. Sam’s family wants him back.

Sam refuses and embarks on a quest with Thea for justice —or revenge, depending on whose head you are in at the time.

Viktor joins but is alarmed when he hears Lucifer has upped the steaks; Thea is wanted dead or alive.

If you have read the first two novels in the series, you will love this powerful ending. Love is rekindled, secrets unearthed, and yet questions may remain.

In this story, we learn about forgiveness, honesty, and sacrifice. I give this an age rating of 16+ for mild violence but clean romance. I also give this finale 5 dragons out of 5. The best one yet.

I have spoken enough about the series, go and read it for yourself!
