Book Review – Three Clean Teen Books with Plot Twists

There is nothing better than a well-executed plot twist in a book. Some of my favorite plot twists include:

  • An ally that turns out to be a double agent conspiring against the main character
  • Assuming a character is dead, but they show up to save/ruin the day
  • A red-herring that distracts the reader to draw false conclusions about the plot and then an innovative revelation redirects the final act of the book
  • A side character who discloses a deep secret that changes your outlook on things that happened throughout the entire book
  • A case of a secret or mistaken identity

There are so many more possible plot twists, but you get the idea. I love when authors give me subtle misdirection, and then twist the plot to follow an unconventional path. However, it is to be noted that I will only enjoy the plot twist if isn’t obvious that the author is pulling a fast one on me. I want to be jaw-dropping-shocked! Authors who do this well are very talented in their craft and I will be their number one fan.

Keep in mind, that I (and most readers) want a “plot twist” and not a “plot trick.” I rarely enjoy a supernatural miracle or when a totally new, unintroduced character sweeps in and saves the day. An effective plot twist has to be believable and grounded in the story. For me, the best plot twists are ones that make me go back and reread chapters to see the trail of crumbs that I ignored, as I thought I had the plot all figured out.

To be fair, not every book needs a plot twist to be a worthwhile read. But, if you love plot twists, then I highly recommend the three clean teen books listed below. I won’t tell you which plot twist they employ, but know that there is at least one surprise in each one. I read each of these books within the past year and I still think about how ingenious they each were.

Have you read any of these books? Do you agree with them being on this list? Please keep your comments spoiler free, as I want future readers to get the full experience.

Since I’m writing YA fantasy, my three examples are all within that genre, but I love plot twists in other genres, too. What other epic plot twist, clean teen books do you recommend? I (and I’m sure others) would love to read more clever books like these! Happy reading…

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen

This Upper MG/Young Young Adult book is so crafty. Sage provides all the snark, wit, and epic one-liners anyone could ask for. All the dialogue in the book is phenomenal.

Constant tension, high stakes, and riddles sprinkled throughout keep you turning the pages to see which orphan Conner chooses as his puppet prince, while the others are all disposed of.

The only content warning would be regarding Conner’s treatment of the four orphans. Not explicitly gory, but hard to read of the horrible treatment of youth at the hands of adults all in the name of “patriotism.”

Fawkes by Nadine Brandes

Fawkes is a historical fiction fantasy book. (Did you know such a thing existed?) The story follows the historical events of Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder plot in 17th century London, but adds magical elements and deep symbolism of the “color powers/masks” and “stone plague.”

This book tackles hard topics, such as religious discrimination, genocide, racism, and social status woes. Yet, Nadine Brandes uses Thomas and Emma to masterfully face each topic head-on and weaves a wonderful, believable story, making me wish that there had been more Thomases and Emmas in our past to pave a brighter, less stormy present. May we all be inspired by the underlying themes and lessons to march toward a more hopeful future!

A healthy romantic relationship is presented (one kiss). There is quite a bit of fighting/death (but no gory details). And there is an assassination plot with a tragic ending (even a fantasy author can’t change history).

Raven Heir by Stephanie Burgis

A set of magical triplets, warring dynasties fighting to control the kingdom, a dangerous trek across an enchanted land, deception from extended family, layers upon layers of secrets, and a broken crown. The Raven Heir packed quite the punch for MG fantasy!

The unique magical gifting of each triplet made for quite the trio—and you will root for them to succeed in their quest.

Themes of found family were beautifully interwoven – with a strong overarching message of family unity.

    • I discovered Raven Heir because of you! Yes, they are all so good…I wish I could re-read them again for the first time to experience the amazing plot twists all over again!

  • They all look amazing! Thanks for sharing and also showing the difference between plot twists and plot tricks! I’ve always known subconsciously that I’ve been tricked but now I have a name for it.
