YA Book Review: Crown of Secrets

Crown of Secrets kept me coming back for more answers. Will Verene survive in an enemy kingdom? Will Verene ever wield magic? Who’s behind some unfortunate incidences?

This book checked all the boxes for me mostly because it’s a comparable title to Unbetrothed, my debut novel. There’s a princess who lacked abilities while those around her wielded powerful giftings. She struggles with inadequacy. An enemy prince attracts her attention. Though many similarities can be made between my debut novel and this one, Crown of Secrets takes a different turn, and I enjoyed it.

First, Verene is attending a school in an enemy kingdom as a way to be useful to her kingdom. She’s giving and patient with her circumstances.

Second, I loved not knowing who to trust. The entire story is full of characters who can backstab her at any moment. By the end, you get an answer, but not the full answer.

Third, the magic system was different than I’d read in other books. I enjoyed learning more about it and seeing the trouble it presented in different situations.

This book has a hint of romance with a single undescriptive kiss. The violence keeps to a minimal to almost none. A character dies and people are injured. Though I prefer more action scenes, this books still kept my attention throughout.

Overall, the content was clean. If you are looking for a YA fantasy with lots of intrigue, this is for you.

What’s the last princess book you read?

  • The last princess book I read was yours! Unbetrothed. A shout out: Read it everyone!
But…recently, my grandchildren and I watched the Prince of Egypt…(Does a prince story count?) I liked it, but books are always better!
