Yes, the title is right. Read with your teen.
In my last post I wrote that YA literature is not what it used to be. Paranormal is everywhere and books about alternative lifestyles are filling the shelves.
That’s why this is the best time ever to read with your teen.
Now I realize your teen may not want you reading every book they read and that’s okay. Don’t try to barge in.
Pick a book or two that you can read together. You can pick a non-controversial book or an edgy one. If your teen is determined to read about difficult topics read with them and then discuss.
You might be thinking that YA books will bore you.
Trust me – they will not.
I’m a YA author so I read a ton of young adult books and they are just as exciting and well written as any fiction book on the market.
Maybe you’re thinking you don’t know where to start. It just so happens that I have tons of suggestions.
We have a talented group of authors here at the Storyteller Squad. You can buy any YA or MG book written by a member of this group without fear of what you might find between the pages.
So, I have to recommend us!
Here are some more recommendations:
YA/Romantic
The Selection series by Kiera Cass
YA/Fantasy
Dust by Kara Swanson
Romanov by Nadine Brandes
YA/Drama
The Lost Girl of Astor Street by Stephanie Morrill
The White Rose Resists by Amanda Barratt
Embassy Row series by Ally Carter
YA/Comical
Freaky in Fresno by Laurie Boyle Crompton
Middle Grade
A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen
Winterborne Home for Vengeance and Valor by Ally Carter
I could go on and on but this list should get you started. I’ve read all of these books and enjoyed them. They are not puff pieces by any means. They deal with war, death and family dysfunction, but in an appropriate way.
So, grab your teen and head to the bookstore or Amazon. Pick out a book together and read on.
Please let me know if you and your teen read one of these books and what you think about it. You can email me at sharonrene17@gmail.com
