BOOK TALK: Remnants

What do you imagine the future will look like? If God holds off many more years, what else will happen? How will the people view us hundreds of years from now? I’ve toyed with this idea for one of my manuscripts and came up with something that seems impossible today. Then again we’re in 2020, a year where life is turned upside down.

One of my favorite YA authors also toyed with this similar idea and added a touch of Maker given superpowers.

In Lisa T. Bergren’s Remnants, a group of people are born with special powers meant to help them save the world. And the world is anything but pleasant. We see a different country with a different form of leadership. The technology is less advanced for the general population and the sinful nature of humans has twisted a new sort of society.

I love this story because there are so many biblical imageries, special giftings, and relatable characters. Lisa gives little glimpses of hope with a group of gifted people who do missions for the Maker. This special group grows up with a set of parents, protecting them from The Sons of Sheol—evil beings out to kill anyone sympathetic to those who follow the Maker.

Though this book is soaked with biblical references, it’s for a 13+ audience. There are sword fights, romantic attraction and some crazy sinful people lurking throughout the story. Don’t let this stop from reading the story. Lisa does a great job at describing mature topics in a tactful way.

Overall, I recommend this story.

I’d love to know what you imagine about the future. Then we can read this story together and see if this story matches our thoughts.
