I speak at a lot of schools and the number one questions I get at the end is, “What advice do you have for young writers?” It’s a two-part answer that came out of my own experience as a writer and speaker. I always share with students how my first book got rejected multiple times by agents and publishers. Students now share with me what they remember most about my presentation is how I said to never give up!
Don’t Be Afraid
Don’t be afraid to insert yourself into a story—your experiences, emotions, fears, and doubts. The best advice I received as a new writer was to write from what I knew, meaning write from my own experiences. The more a reader feels what you felt when writing, the more realistic your story comes across. Make your readers feel like they are a part of your story.
Don’t Be Discouraged
Don’t be discouraged if you are stuck and don’t know what to write next. Writing is hard work and sticking to the end takes time, patience, and a lot of self-discipline. I have a tendency to want to quit about half-way through a story, especially when the feedback I’m receiving is not exactly encouraging! Instead of quitting, share your story with others so they can help you improve your writing and help you get to the finish line. If you receive some not so great feedback, don’t be discouraged! Take it as an opportunity to write better. I’ve learned a ton from others by asking for help!
Above all, Be Bold, Be Brave, Be Courageous! And Never Give Up!
#NeverGiveUp
Awesome advice. We can get bogged down in the technical stuff and think that’s what’s holding us back when the truth is we’re just afraid and discouraged. Great reminder to push ahead.
