Today is the 80th anniversary of Pearl Harbor so I thought I’d highlight some books that take place during WWII.
As we all know, WWII is a very popular theme for writers – Many books, fiction and non-fiction fill the shelves.
The world was on the brink of destruction and yet good people stood up and fought.
They truly were “the greatest generation.”
Here are my WWII fiction recommendations:
- The White Rose Resists, Amanda Barratt
This is a wonderful YA book about college students in Germany who risked their lives to print pamphlets detailing the atrocities of the German government. It is based on fact. I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to read about the war from a different POV and meet some very brave young people.
- The Victory Club, Robin Lee Hatcher
In 1943, the women of America banded together to make a life for themselves while their husbands and sons fought overseas. These women faced their own battles on the homefront.
- Vienna Prelude, Bodie and Brock Thoene
In 1936 Nazi darkness descends upon Europe. This is the first book in the Zion Covenant series. It is very powerful and eye-opening as are all the Thoene books.
- Where Treasure Hides, Johnnie Alexander
This book is written by one of my special writer friends, Johnnie Alexander. This is a beautiful love story set against the backdrop of WWII in Europe.
I hope you will check out some of these books and learn more about World War II and the remarkable people who lived and died then.
We should be very grateful for that great generation and for the wonderful country we now enjoy.
If you have any WWII favorite books, please let me know what they are.
So many great books! I’m going to have to check out Where Treasure Hides. Thanks!
Thanks. I’m sure you’d like Where Treasure Hides and the others too.
These all sound really good, Sharon. A couple MG novels my kids and I have read are Anna Is Still Here by Ida Vos, about a young girl who survives the Holocaust and Twenty and Ten by Claire Huchet Bishop about children who hide some Jewish children from the Nazis. A gripping and scary WWII novel for adults and older teens is Saving Amelie by Cathy Gohlke. We must never forget their sacrifice.
Thanks for all the good suggestions, Michelle. I’ll have to check those out.
Two gripping adult historical fiction novels on World War II: All the Light We Cannot See, by Anthony Doer, and Lilac Girls, by Martha Hall Kelly. My number one, can’t put it down book in this genre for YA and adult is: The Book Thief, by Marcus Zusak This last book was also made into a movie
Thanks Gretchen. I saw the movie of The Book Thief. It is a great story.
Great post for National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Sharon! I’ve read Where Treasure Hides by Johnnie Alexander. Great book! Gail Kittleson is another prolific WWII historical writer.
Thanks Tracy for stopping by and commenting.
