Are you looking for adventure and neat magical gifts? If yes, The Story Peddler book might be for you.
This story takes you into a new world where a tyrannical king rules. He’s put laws in place where only certain stories are allowed to be told. Tanwen, the main character, has a gift of storytelling where each part of her story turns into ribbons of light that come from her hands. By the end of her story telling, the story solidifies into a physical crystal that she sells. I don’t know about you, but I thought this idea was unique and interesting.
- For: 12+ audience
- Cautions: There’s a little imbibing by a repugnant mentor at the beginning of the book. The story includes fight scenes, nothing gory. Overall, it’s a clean teen book with a great message.
Though, Tanwen is the main character, Princess Braith is my favorite. She sits under her father’s evil rule and tries to show mercy whenever she can. I found myself hoping to see more of Braith’s point of view. The third point of view is told by The One in the Dark; it’s an unknown character. I found the last point of view hard to understand, but extremely fascinating once I knew who the character was. In fact, I may have gone back and read the past chapters again once I knew the character’s identity.
A few things you should know:
1. The story gives you a great base for understanding who Tanwen is and her dreams.
2. The adventure really takes off around page 70.
3. The romance is very low key.
Do I recommend this book? Yes. The story has great messages and has a satisfying ending. The epilogue leaves me wanting more. The next book in the series, The Story Raider, is already out. Also, the third book, The Story Hunter, comes out May 19, 2020.
An added bonus for me, The Story Peddler is a great comparison title for my own manuscript. I write differently and have a lot more romance, but the idea of jumping into a new world where people have visible gifts for the good of a community lives in both our work. Let’s be real, I’ve dreamt of having a super power on more than one occasion. This sort of thing is my cup of tea. Have you ever had that dream? In this book, you get to experience having a special gift.
What special magical ability would you have if you could choose one?
It’s amazing to write about things that we cannot have – like superpowers. If I had one it would be fly.
Yes, it is fun to experience through books. I’ve wanted to fly before, but I get a little queasy with heights.
Good book review. I’ve wondered about this book. I’ll have to check it out.
Let me know what you think of it. I hope you enjoy it!
I need to read this book. Thanks for the great review!I think my superpower would be instantaneous transport from one place to another.
I would love that superpower too. One of my books has that power and it’s so much fun to write!
